March 2024 College Planning Calendar

college planning word cloud

March madness and all things spring are right around the corner! While most of us are looking forward to warmer weather, more sunshine and longer days...others are dreading daylight savings time and the springing forward of clocks. This is also a season of change, especially for incoming high school freshman and graduating seniors.

Help your student stay motivated through the last of the short, cold days with these quick tips and dates from our March 2024 College Planning Calendar:

  • 8th graders: High school is just one summer away! That’s a big deal! Help your student select classes that are academically engaging, but also offer some breathing room for the transition. Keep an eye on pre-requisite courses for 9th grade courses that may earn your student college credit (e.g. IB, AP or dual-enrollment). This is also a great time to begin any volunteer activities with an eye on future scholarships.

  • 9th graders: The first year of high school is almost over! Take a look ahead of possible summer courses that will open up elective space during the academic year. Physical education credit or attending a summer camp are a great option!

  • 10th graders: Avoid the sophomore slump by creating a dream job list, starting that college dream sheet and participating in a fun extra-curricular sport or activity. Now is a great time to start building a resume and begin to look for a summer job or camp....these will go fast so keep a close on an application deadlines!

  • 11th graders: Hopefully students have started their college dream sheets and making college visit plans. After taking required standardized tests, schedule college visits on weekdays, perhaps during high school spring break. Most colleges are closed during their spring breaks, but some may offer limited services. Be sure you are able to see the campus during a normal week and pay attention to special programs, student life and on-campus engagement activities.

  • 12th graders: While this year has been frustrating for college-bound students, it appears the FAFSA hurdles are nearly resolved. This is the time to start evaluating acceptance and offers from schools. Verify financial aid availability and commit deadlines (many have been pushed back to May 15th or later) as well as apply for merit and talent based institutional scholarships.

Finally, seniors, get ready to graduate! Finish strong, enjoy the high school activities that you'll remember...Senior Prom, spring sports and awards banquets. This is your time to shine and soak it all in. Congratulations!
